Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report August 21st, 2020

This report will cover the Truckee and Little Truckee rivers. The Fly Fishing up here continues to be pretty good and the fish are still looking up. Love the #dryfly eat. The warmer water temps have condensed the fishing into a morning or late evening option on the #truckeeriver. The #littletruckee will be cool throughout the day. It has been smokey the last few days but, I think it helps with the lower light intensity and keeps crowds away. The flows are great for this time of year.

Truckee River Conditions

The flows on the Truckee River are currently 316cfs in town, and 501cfs at Boca. Been pretty steady for a while now. Clarity is good and temps are 68-70 degrees by 2pm.

Truckee River Tactics

Tactics for the Truckee River currently are pretty similar to the last report. Most of the flies are getting smaller and the hatches are waning a bit. Seeing lots of Hoppers and the some of the Crawdads look to be molting. Dry Fly, Dry/Dropper, Streamer, and Nymphing techniques will all take fish right now. Pick your favorite technique and give it a go. Or, try something different either way you can find willing participants.

Truckee River Summary

Little Truckee River Conditions

The Little Truckee flows are 147cfs and the water clarity is great. Temp are cool all day with the LT being a tailwater. This is where you go to test your far and fine skills.

Little Truckee River Tactics

Ground Hog Day out the the Little Truckee river. Prefect dry fly fishing. Dry/dropper technique works well at this flow too. There are sporadic hatches of PMD's, small Beatis, and Midges throughout the day. If you spot a working fish, stop and observe its feeding frequency and try to time a cast to that frequency. Its not easy out there but there are some nice fish to try and dupe.

Little Truckee River Suggested Flies

Sizing maybe getting smaller than I have listed here. Try various one to find the match. PMD's, Beatis, and Midges are all out and about. For dry flies: Green Drake 8-10, Parachute Adams 10-20, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, Quigley Cripple 10-18, Royal Wluff 10-14, Thorax Dun 14-18, PMD 16-18, Melon Quill 16-18, Hackle Stacker 16-18, and Compara Dun 14-16.
