Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report for June 24th, 2025

This report is an update for the Truckee River and beyond. While we have been enjoying some great dryfly fishing on the Truckee River the water master has upped the flows out of Lake Tahoe today. This bump will be great in the long term but probably mess with the fish for a couple of days. It may not be the only bump either. While over on the Little Truckee it is running higher than the last report and I imagine that it will start to drop soon as well, maybe even tomorrow. But who knows? And out on the creeks the dryfly fishing has been excellent as well. There are lots of Mayflies, Caddis, and Little Yellow Stones hatching on all of the moving water. It may take some changing of flies to figure out what they are keying on. Let's not forget about the reservoirs. The lakes are fishing pretty good as well and not many people on them either. Now is the time! Don't wait til August to get out on the water.

Truckee River Conditions
Truckee River flows are currently 234 cubic feet per second above town, and below Boca inflow they are 1060 cubic feet per second. Water temps in town are 56-57 degrees mid-day. Water is clear.
Truckee River Techniques
Truckee River techniques are going to vary with the flows that are now being manipulated by the water master. This may put a damper on the good dryfly action that we have been experiencing for the last few days. Dry/dropper, nymphing, and streamers all have a place. Pick the technique that fits the water type you are fishing. Below Boca nymphing and streamers would be a good choice given the higher flows. It is a smorgasboard as all of the bug species are available to the fish. Don't be afraid to change flies a few times.
Truckee River Suggested Flies
Truckee River suggested flies at this time is to bring all of them. There are multiple Mayflies and Caddis coming off. Mayflies have been the preferred meal. Again this week you might have to work through the bugs to find "the one". Dry flies: try ants 10, Parachute Adams 14-20, March Brown 14-16, Thorax Dun 14-16, Compara Dun10-16, Green Drake 10, Green Drake emergers 10, Royal Wulff 10-16, Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Quigley Cripples 10-16, and RS-2 16-20. For nymphs: Haresear 12-16, Micro May 16-22, Rainbow Warrior 14-18, Pheasant Tail 12-16, Flashback PT 12-18, Perdigons 14-18, SJW, Copper Johns 10-16, Frenchie 12 -16, Rubber legs 10-14, Twenty Incher 10-14, and Princes 10-18. For streamers try Woolley Bugger 6-8, Sculpzilla 4-8, Sparkle Minnow 6-8, and Dolly Llama 4, or big and ugly!
Truckee River Summary
The Truckee River has been fishing very good lately, but this bump of flows may put the fish off for a couple of days. Nymphing will be effective throughout the day given the flows. Dryfly action early and late in the day.
Little Truckee River Conditions
The Little Truckee flows are currently 556cfs. This may change so check the guage before you go. Water temps were 48-50 degrees mid-day. It is pretty clear.
Little Truckee River Techniques
Little Truckee River Technique for this flows would be to nymph with lots of weight. The water is super fast and it will take some heavy flies and lead to get down to the fish. Dryflies in the slower sections should work but there are not many of those at this flow. Be careful wading here as the current is fast and strong.
Little Truckee River Suggested Flies
Like everywhere else all of the bugs are available to the trout. Green Drakes are popping mid-day as well as BWO's and smaller Caddis. My suggestions would be the same as the Truckee River above.
Little Truckee River Summary
The Little Truckee River is high right now. Fish can be caught here nymphing with plenty of lead. There are fish rising in the few slower sections. Watch where you wade here because the flows are fast and strong.
The Reservoirs and Creeks
Prosser, Boca, and Stampede. The reservoirs are in good shape currently for trout and smallmouth bass. The water has not gotten too warm to drive the trout out into deeper water. Fish are cruising in closer to the shore. Indicator nymphing and streamers are great choices to find some fish. There are Callibeatis mayflies hatching during the day as well as beetles getting blown into the water when the wind comes up. The fish seemed to like both. Balanced leech and mayfly nymph under the indicator with a little movement was a good technique, as well.
The area creeks are in prime shape! Bring the bug spray. Ants, beetles, mayflies, and caddis are all present, but really, I don't think the fish care. A good presentation is more important than the bug.
