Happpy 4th of July to you all. This report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. As I stated two reports ago, there would be some changes made to the flow regime for the Truckee River watershed. Well, that has happened and things have changed a bit. The Truckee River is up while the Little Truckee is coming down. Donner Creek and Prosser Creek have both been lowered as well. This also means the lower river is also dropping, which will open up some opportunities down stream. While we have been enjoying some stellar dryfly action, that has slowed a bit with the flow changes. However, condtions tend to right themseleves pretty quickly around here. The Mayfly and Caddis hatches have slowed down and the Stoneflies have started in their place. The fishing is still pretty good, we are just back to nymphing for a little while. What trout can resist a good rubber leg?
With these higher flows it is a prefect time to bust out the Trout Spey rod. And, as it happens, I have a clinic coming up on July 19th just for that. Limited spots so sign up soon. Check out the details click below.

Truckee River Conditions
Truckee River flows are currently 274 cubic feet per second above town, and below Boca inflow they are 788 cubic feet per second. Water temps in town are 61-62 degrees mid-day. Water is a little off color.
Truckee River Techniques
Truckee River techniques are going need to change with the bump in flows in the upper river as the fish settle in. The change has slowed the dryfly action some but fish on the edges are looking up. Down on the Lower River nymphing and streamers are going to be a little more effective now given the flows are dropping and will continue to drop through the summer in that section. This will create plenty of new opportunities.
Truckee River Suggested Flies
Truckee River suggested flies. The larger stoneflies have started to make an appearance and the trout have noticed. There are still Mayflies and Caddis coming off as well, just not as thick. Dry flies: try ants 10, Parachute Adams 14-20, March Brown 14-16, Thorax Dun 14-16, Compara Dun10-16, Green Drake 10, Green Drake emergers 10, Royal Wulff 10-16, Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Double Dutch 8-10, Quigley Cripples 10-16, and RS-2 16-20. For nymphs: Haresear 12-16, Micro May 16-22, Rainbow Warrior 14-18, Pheasant Tail 12-16, Flashback PT 12-18, Perdigons 14-18, SJW, Copper Johns 10-16, Frenchie 12 -16, Rubber legs 10-14, Twenty Incher 10-14, and Princes 10-18. For streamers try Woolley Bugger 6-8, Sculpzilla 4-8, Sparkle Minnow 6-8, and Dolly Llama 4, or big and ugly!
Truckee River Summary
The Truckee River has been fishing well. The bump up of flows in the upper river and the drop in flows for the lower river put the fish off for a few days. Nymphing and streamers will be the techniques of choice given the flow changes.

Little Truckee River Conditions
The Little Truckee flows are currently 344cfs. This may change, so check the guage before you go. Water temps were 48-50 degrees mid-day. It is pretty clear.
Little Truckee River Techniques
Little Truckee River Technique for these flows is nymphing with an indcator or euro style. The water has been lowered and a few more spots are fishable. Dryflies in the slower sections if you see rising fish. And there are various Mayflies and Caddis coming off mid-day.
Little Truckee River Suggested Flies
Like everywhere else all of the bugs are available to the trout. GreenDrakes are popping mid-day, as well as BWO's, PMD's and smaller Caddis. Suggested flies would be the same as the Truckee River above except for the stones. I have not seen the bigger stones on the LT.
Little Truckee River Summary
The Little Truckee River is coming down and a bit more fishable. There are some mid-day hatches and fish are coming up in a few slower sections. Nymphing is still going to be the best bet. Check the flows as they could be lowered again at anytime.
