Well, it is Friday the 13th and today's report will focus on the Truckee River and other venues in the Truckee area. It has been very nice here and the fishing has been very good as well. The rivers and creeks are all coming into shape nicely except for the Little Truckee, which is running 473cubic feet a minute. Flowers are popping, bugs are hatching, and trout are looking up. The ants have come and are starting to fade and Green Drakes should be popping any time. There are nice hatches of various Mayflies, Caddis, and Midges thoughout the day. Dryfly season has started.

Looking ahead, there are going to be some flow changes coming around the 1st of July for the Truckee River and other rivers/creeks. The flows out of Lake Tahoe are going to be around 300cfs+/- and expected to stay there until late August. The Little Truckee should start dropping soon as well. Most of the reservoirs are pretty near full and it would appear that we should have good flows for most of the summer. But you never know what will happen with this water management system. With that said, we are looking at super conditions for a couple of months.

Truckee River Conditions

Truckee River flows are currently 184 cubic feet a second above town, and below Boca inflow they are 1000 cubic feet a second. Water temps in town are 54-55 degrees mid-day. Water is clear. Below Boca was 50 degress at 8am and its usual turbidy for these flows. The flows have a diural change of about 50cfs currently.

Truckee River Techniques

Truckee River techniques are going to vary by the section that you are fishing. TC to Boca sections would be good for dries, dry/dropper and nymphing. Well down below Boca nymphing and streamers would be a good choice. Dries along the edges and in the slow eddies. My seining shows that all of the bug species are in play and you may have to change flies a few times to dial it in.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Truckee River suggested flies at this time is to bring all of them. I found the other day that there were multiple Mayflies and Caddis coming off but the fish were targeting the Mayflies. Might have to work through the bugs to find "the one". Dry flies: try ants 10, Parachute Adams 14-20, March Brown 14-16, Thorax Dun 14-16, Compara Dun10-16, Green Drake 10, Green Drake emergers 10, Royal Wulff 10-16, Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Quigley Cripples 10-16, and RS-2 16-20. For nymphs: Haresear 12-16, Micro May 16-22, Rainbow Warrior 14-18, Pheasant Tail 12-16, Flashback PT 12-18, Perdigons 14-18, SJW, Copper Johns 10-16, Frenchie 12 -16, Rubber legs 10-14, Twenty Incher 10-14, and Princes 10-18. For streamers try Woolley Bugger 6-8, Sculpzilla 4-8, Sparkle Minnow 6-8, and Dolly Llama 4, or big and ugly!

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is fishing very good currently. Depending on the section that you choose to fish will determine your technique. Tahoe to Boca inflow is a much smaller river and Boca on down to stateline is more than double in size! The water is warming up and the fish are active.

The Reservoirs and Creeks

There are still good flows coming into Prosser, Boca, and Stampede. Like I mentioned in the last report, there is good opportunity for Trout and Smallmouth Bass for those that would like a different experience or don't want to battle the crowds on the Truckee or Little Truckee. While a boat or float tube would be nice it is not necessary to get into fish. Walking the shoreline and fishing around the structures or to the rising fish works just fine. Indicator nymphing and streamers are solid choices to find some fish. There may even be some Mayflies hatching during the day.

The area creeks are coming into prime shape along with the mosquitoes. Bring the bug spray. Ants, Beetles, Mayflies, and Caddis are all present but, really I don't think the fish care. A good presentation is more important than the right bug.
