Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report June 6, 2025

The Truckee River will be the focus of this report as well as updates on a few of the other venues in the area. In general, the flows are pretty good on most of the rivers and creeks except maybe the LT which has continued to get bumped up. All the other ditches are in good shape. The Reservoirs are fishing good as well for Trout and Smallmouth Bass. The big Carpenter Ants started last week around the area. On the Truckee, there is a nice March Brown hatch mid-day and the fish in some runs are tuned into them, providing some good Dry Fly action for awhile at times. The Caddis are also starting to pop. The weather has been great and looks to be nice for the next week. Perfect time to get out and get some fishing in.

Ladies, I have an intro clinic just for you on June 28th. Check out the details on my Clinics page.

Truckee River Conditions

Current Flows on the Truckee are 247cubic feet a minute above Truckee and 881 cubic feet a minute below Boca. Water temps are 52-54 degrees mid-day and the water is clear. There is a 75+/- cfs change between morning and evening flows as the runnoff is winding down.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River Tactics - you have some choices. A nymphing set-up, dry dropper set-up, or dry fly set-up. Choice 1: As always nymphing in its various form is best for all day success. Choice 2: A Dry Dropper set-up for mid-day on. Choice 3: Dryfly for when you only have a few hours in the afternoon or evening. Like I mentioned above, the Carpenter Ants and March Browns are out and with some Caddis mixxed in. Choice 4: Streamer set-up for that big carnivior that can't get by on bugs alone.

Truckee River Summary

In Summary the Truckee is fishing great. The water is slowly dropping, water temps are slowly coming up, and the water and weather are clear. The spring hatches have started and fish are looking up at times during the day. Pick a time and a technique and get out there.

Reservoirs

Prosser, Boca, and Stampede have been fishing great. Got a little bit of everything going on out there. The reservoirs are all getting close to full. The inlet stream are all still flowing at good rates and dropping slowly. The trout are still hanging out in those areas. The smallmouth are in play as well. Smallies like trout flies and structure. The structure could be rocky out crop when the water is low or submerged willows when the water is high like it is now. Indicator nymphing and stripping streamers are both good techniques for catching both species of fish.

Milton

The access to Milton is open. The lake is very full and camping and parking is somewhat limited. The Mosquitoes are also alive and doing well. Bring the bug spray! Ants where on the menu last week as well a smaller Mayfly. Topwater action was strong until around 1pm. Indicator ymphing in the afternoon with small mayflies and midges also was effective. The water is coming off the top of Jackson Meadows Reservoir and was the temp was 60 degrees.
