Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report September 9th, 2024

This report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. The flows have been dropped out of Lake Tahoe for the Truckee River and have come up a bit over on the Little Truckee. Actually, very good conditions for this time of year. The fall fishing should be really good this year given the solid flows that we have seen all summer. The main hatches have started to wain a bit on both rivers and the smaller bugs are coming into play. There are plenty of hoppers around as well. As the air temps start to cool here later in the month the streamer fishing should pick up as the Browns start to get ready to find a mate and spawn. This is a great time to be here fishing and we are really looking forward to some great action this fall.

Speaking of fall fishing adventures I will be headed to the Middle Fork of the Salmon in Idaho from September 11th-21st for my own fly fishing adventure. I will be unavailable and offline. The phone will be answered by Janice and you can still book online during the time I am gone. I will contact those that book trips when I return.

Truckee River Conditions

The Truckee River flows are 68 cubic feet a second above town and 468 cubic feet a second below Boca inflow. Flows from Lake Tahoe should continue to drop. Water temps are 62-64 mid-afternoon. Clarity is great.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River Tactics for the the fall should include the ability to switch gears from nymphing in the morning to dry/dropper mid-day to dryfly in the evening and some early and late day streamers. Also, given the flow regime the river is basically three different sections. Tahoe to Glenshire Bridge(low flow), Glenshire to Boca(medium flow) and Boca to Stateline(normal flow). Each zone is going to lend itself to different techniques. Water temps are still important and the colder water will be in the morning and warming throughout the day. Attractor patterns are big this time of year whether you are nymphing or fishing dry/dropper rig a little mayfly or caddis trailing your big stone, crawdad, or chubby is a pretty solid setup for success. For streamers a big and small tandem rig can be effective as well.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is fishing great. Look for the Truckee to continue to drop from Lake Tahoe. Water temps are still moving from cold in the morning to warm in the afternoon. You may have to change tactics a few times a day to stay on the fish. Fall conditions couldn't be better.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The Little Truckee Flows are 63 cubic feet a second. Water temps are good and clarity is excellent. At these flows the water is warmer towards the reservoir.

Little Truckee River Tactics

Little Truckee River Tactics for these conditions would be to downsize again and lengthen the leader. It is far and fine time as the bugs have gotten smaller and the fish are well educated. A stealth approach to the water is helpful as well as an accurate cast. Less is more here. Dries and Dry/dropper would would be my techniques of choice. Kokanee and Browns are starting to stage at the inlet for thier upcoming spawning runs and can provide some streamer action.
