Truckee Tahoe Later Spring Fly Fishing Report June 9th, 2026

The fly fishing in the area is heating up. Bugs are popping, flows are great, and water temps are perfect. The Truckee River has been shaping up nicely, and the fishing is great. The March Browns and Caddis are coming off in good numbers some days, and the fish are looking up, even when not much is going on. I've noticed the Stoneflies are getting active as well. Green Drakes should be showing up next. Super fun, but you may have to stay out late for them. Given the top water is so good, I might have to put the dedicated nymphing rig away for a while. The dry fly fishing has been really good lately on the Truckee River.
Over at the Little Truckee River, the flows are nice, and there are some light hatches like on the Truckee. Last weekend, it was pretty crowded out there. But don’t worry, there are plenty of other spots around the Truckee area where you can find fish without all the people.
The reservoirs are always a good bet, and there are plenty of different species to target, like Kokanee, Rainbows, Browns, and Smallmouth Bass. It may be a little too late to find the Kokanee with a fly rod. The Rainbows are active, and so are the Smallmouth, which are super fun on a fly rod. Working the shoreline and inlets around structure is the most effective, and you can use a sinking line and streamers or soak some balanced leeches under an indicator. You never know what you'll pull from the depths.
The smaller creeks have good flows, water temps, and hatches are starting on them as well. Mayflies, Caddis, and Stoneflies are on the menu. Depending on where you go, these fish are not that picky, and a good attractor dry will do the trick. There will be fewer fisher people as well, but the mosquitoes will be waiting for you. Bring bug spray!

Truckee River Conditions
Truckee River is flowing at 287 cubic feet a minute above town and 631 cubic feet a minute at Boca. The water temps during the last few days has been 58-62 degrees. Clairty is good.
Truckee River Tactics
Truckee River Tactics for these conditions I feel the The Dry Fly fishing is pretty solid and going to get better. Target the slicks and anywhere there is good cover. Dry/Dropper rigs are also a good choice. Nymphing in all its forms is a strong all day option throughout the system. The streamers early and late in the day or on overcast days will bring out the bigger fish.

Truckee River suggested flies: Dry flies: Chubby Chernoble 6-12, Double Dutch 8-10, Royal Wulff 10-12, Ants 10-14, Parachute Adams 14-16, Purple Haze 14-16, Thorax Dun 14-16, Sparkle Flag 14-18, Spent Caddis 16-14, Spinners 12-16, and Quigley Cripples 12-14. For nymphs: Drowned Ant 10, Haresear 12-16, Burks bottom roller 12-16, Deep Sparkle Pupa 14, Z-Wing Caddis 14, Micro May 16-18, Rainbow Warrior 14-16, Pheasant Tail 12-16, Flashback PT 12-16, Perdigons 14-18, SJW, Copper Johns 12-18, Frenchie 12 -16, Rubber legs 6-14, Twenty Incher 8-14, and Princes 8-18. For streamers try Woolley Bugger 6, Sculpzilla 8, and Sparkle Minnow 6.
