Truckee Tahoe Mid-Summer Fly Fishing Report July 7th, 2026

Great weather and great fishing has been the case these last couple of weeks. Last week was a little cooler and super nice. We continue to have nice overnight low airtemps and that keeps the water cooler for longer during the day. The Truckee River is in great shape and the fish are looking up even when it looks like nothing is going on. The hatches are starting to ease up a bit with the bugs getting a bit smaller. It has been really fun on the Truckee River.

On the other venues it has been pretty stellar fishing as well. Still plenty of water on the smaller creeks. Although the water temps are coming up in the afternoons. Milton Reservoir has been fishing pretty well too, judging by the number of people there on my last visit. I haven't visited the LT for some time but looking at the flows it's probably time to pay it a visit for my next report.

The reserviors (Prosser, Boca, and Stampede) offer some great fishing opportunities as well. Especially when the rivers and creeks start to warm up. The Smallmouuth Bass are super fun to catch and they like trout flies. Sometimes you don't even have to change your rig if you've been fishing on the river. Smallies will respond to various tactics like poppers in the evenings, indicator rigs, and streamers on sinking lines during the day. Might even catch another species since the reservoirs have multiple species swimming around in their depths.

Thank you to the Gals that took my Ladies Only Clinic. You were a great group and it was a good time! My next clinic offering is the Trout Spey Clinic on July 19th and there are spots available. Click here for more information and to sign up or give me a call 530-386-0525

Truckee River Conditions

Truckee River is flowing at 278 cubic feet a second above town and 500 cubic feet a second at Boca. The water temps during the last few days has been 65-67 degrees in the late afternoon above Boca inflow and below Boca inflow it is a bit cooler 64-66 degrees in the late afternoon. Morning temps are good in both zones at around 58-60degrees. Clairty is good.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River Tactics for these conditions like I mentioned in the last report is to flow the thermometer and fish the cooler water. Usually earlier in the day. The Dry Fly fishing continues to bet great with the fish looking up even with nothing going on. Dry/Dropper rigs are also solid choice. Nymphing in all its forms is a good mid-day option throughout the system. For the streamer enthusiasts get out early or late in the day.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is fishing great for dry fly action right now. Nymphing and streamers will also work. If the Truckee is too warm in the afternoon then give the Smallmouth Bass a go on one of the reservoirs. Get it while it good!
