About -
Four Seasons Fly fishing

As an outdoor enthusiast, I, Brian Slusser, was drawn to the Truckee Tahoe area for the outstanding skiing. However, I found a bonus in the excellent fly fishing for wild Rainbow and Brown Trout in the Truckee River. During the winter months, I am a full-time Professional Ski Patroller. During the summer, I am a fully addicted fly fishing nut.

It is my goal to provide a safe, fun, and informative outing for my clients. Along with my avalanche rescue dog Shooter I welcome the opportunity to share my passion for fly fishing with anyone from the beginner to the seasoned veteran. Women and children are encouraged. The group size is limited to four persons per guide.

The mid-summer fishing is here and, all venues are in play and fishing good to excellent. The flows in the Truckee, Little Truckee, Prosser Creek, and Donner Creek have all been jacked around last week. Things have stabilized and fishing is pretty darn good now and should continue to be for awhile. You may still want to check the flows before you go to see if it is what you like. This is the dry fly time of year, at least the big ones that we can all easily see, and coupled with a nymph dropper is the ticket all day long. I love to see the fish eat a well presented dry.

Attention Steelhead anglers! I will be at Morrisons the week of September 20th and looking to book a few dates either side of 20th. The summer fish are already coming into the river. Call me and we can setup a trip.

Truckee River**-*** The flows here have changed a bit and the canyon area down to the stateline is more fishable now. Not much has changed with the bugs since the last report. The Drakes are done but, the fish haven't forgot about them. Now is the time that you can fish a dry all day long. Go BIG and add a nymph dropper and have some fun. Many of the bugs are still hatching so the fish have a lot of choices. Switch it up a bit. Small mayflies(16-18) in the first half of the day then some caddis(14) and Little Yellow Stones(16-12) . The evening has been the best for dry flies.

LIttle Truckee River**-*** The flows have been bumped up and the fishing here is pretty good for the experienced angler. These fish have seen some action and are very spooky, this higher flow should give them a little more time to relax. Longer leaders and careful presentations will get these guys, NOT flogging the water and air with a bunch of false casting. The PMD's (14-16) have started to come off and there are couple other smaller Beatis(18-20) in the mix as well.

North Yuba*** If you want some constant dry fly action this is the place. Caddis(14), Little Yellow Stones(16), and Goldenstones(12-8) are getting these aggressive little fish to hit the surface all day long. My group last week fished the same Goldenstone fly all day. Didn't loose it or have to change once. Great fun! It is warm down by Downieville so start there early and work up the valley during the day. Expect to see some other fisher people as well. This is the best fishing venue right now.

Prosser Reservoir*** The trout fishing has slow a bit here but, the smallmouth have really turned on. Great place to take a kid and get them hooked on fly fishing or fishing in general. Smallmouth are not picky eaters and will eat all of the standard trout flies we use in this area. Fishing under and indicator with copper johns (14-16), PT's (14-16), Birdnest's(14-16), and a Crawdad(8-10) should do the trick. They will also eat a Turcks Tarantula(10) stripped like a popper. Yes, they like poppers too.

Boca Reservoir** The inlet area is the place with the rest of the lake taken over now by water skier and personal water craft. Small beatis(18-20) and midges(18-20) should do the trick. Rip a streamer through early and late in the day and you might get a surprise.

Stampede**-*** Damn, I still have not made it out here yet but, my scouts tell me it is good and fishing similar to Prosser reservoir. The Callibeatis are going strong in the Sagehen arm.

Milton*** The fish are looking up. Pretty much everything I tried here has worked, from pulling nymphs on the sinking line, to midges under the indicator, and flies on top. The Callibeatis(14) are starting to make an appearance and are getting the attention of the fish as well as midges (18-20) and small beatis patterns(18-20).

High Country Lakes and Streams*** Are on fire right now. Had a scout in Desolation this weekend and all of the lakes and streams were kicking out fish. " Most any dry would work but, they were digging the Ant".

If you are looking for a trip, Trout or Steelhead, please give me a call and we can set up what will work for you.

See you on the water,

Brian
