Tahoe Truckee Fly Fishing Report for Early Fall September 2nd, 2026

What a difference a week makes up here in Truckee. We are in the middle of a nice daytime temperature cool down. Compared to the July and August this is what we needed to cool the water down for better fishing on the Truckee and other venues of the area. The forecast is for cooler temps and maybe some rain into Labor Day, Yay! Take the rain part with a grain of salt it is still to far out for our weather office to get it dialed. This temp regime with the continued high flow on the Truckee River should set us up for some great early fall fishing.
And speaking of Fishing, I went on a propecting mission with streamers yesterday on the Truckee River and was almost immediately rewarded with a fish. And, then several grabs and another fish. Switched back to the old reliable Dry/Dropper and the Dry got a couple of grabs and my nymph hooked up. All in all a stellar couple of hours on the Truckee River and I didn't hit the water until 10am. Bankers Hours! The fish were active and eating multiple different flies with multiple different presentations. Cooler water temps may slow the morning bite a bit. Conditions are good and should be great for the big Labor Day weekend coming up.
For those looking for some Little Truckee info I just have not made it out there. The flow is at 43 cubic feet a second. The other smaller creeks and reservoirs should be cooling off nicely and provide some great opportunities this weekend and as we move later into the fall.
Truckee River Conditions
Truckee River is flowing at 278 cubic feet a second above Truckee and 494cubic feet a second at Boca Bridge. Water temps are at 62-63 at noon. River water clairty is good. Be aware that the water flow from Tahoe may change at anytime.
Truckee River Tactics
Truckee River tactics have changed with the cooler weather and water. The dry fly fishing is still pretty good. The fish looking up and the bugs are getting smaller. Dry/dropper rigs are my first choice. Streamers have started to get some love again the the fish are actively chasing them. Nymphing should also be pretty good. It also may not be nessessary to get out super early with the sudden drop in water temps the fish might be sluggish to start the day. Don't be afraid to try something else if your old standby isn't working.

Truckee River suggested flies: Dry flies: Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Royal Wulff 10-12, Ants 14-18, Parachute Adams 14-18, Purple Haze 14-18, Thorax Dun 14-18, Sparkle Flag 14-18, Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, Spent Caddis 14-16, E/C Caddis14-16, Missing Link 14-16, Spinners 16-18, and Quigley Cripples 14-18. For nymphs: Haresear 14-18, Burks bottom roller 14-16, Deep Sparkle Pupa 14-16, Z-Wing Caddis 14-16, Micro May 16-18, Rainbow Warrior 14-18, Pheasant Tail 12-18, Flashback PT 14-18, Perdigons 14-18, SJW, Copper Johns 12-18, Frenchie 12 -16, Rubber legs 6-14, Twenty Incher 8-14, and Princes 8-18. For streamers try Muddler Minnow 6, Woolley Bugger 6, Sculpzilla 8, and Sparkle Minnow 6.
Truckee River Summary
The Truckee River has cooled down quite a bit in recent days. The weather has stirred up the fish and various techniques are working. We couldn't ask for better conditions at this point. It is the Labor Day weekend coming up so expect to see some other anglers out there. Enjoy the weekend.
