Truckee Tahoe Area Fly Flyfishing Report August 1st, 2019

The Truckee Tahoe Area Fly Fishing continues to be excellent. While some of the hatches are waning a bit the fish are looking up and willing to eat well presented Dry Flies. Both the Truckee and Little Truckee rivers are fishing well. The High Country streams and lakes are moving into summer mode although there is still a ton of snow on the higher ridges of the Sierra Crest.

Who doesn't love those fat Truckee Rainbows

Truckee River Conditions

The current Truckee River flows are 219cfs out of Lake Tahoe, 240cfs in Truckee, and 607cfs below Boca. The water temps in town were 60-62 in the mornings and a bit cooler below Boca inflow. Water clarity is good.

Truckee River Tactics

Tactics for the Truckee River are to 1) follow the thermometer especially in the late afternoon. 2) Downsize the #dryfly offering. 3) Make a decent presentation. Morning to Mid-day have been good for dry fly fishing. Dry/Dropper has also been productive when just the Dryfly is not producing. Some of the early season mayflies are done and the ones left are down a size. #Caddis are also out in decent numbers. Little Yellow Stones are ovipositing in the mid morning.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

The flies for the Truckee River are still pretty varied and a size smaller than my last report for the #Mayflies. This is the time of year when that oddball pattern that you haven't fished in years catches a fish. Don't be afraid to change flies. For Dry Flies: Stimulator 6-12, Cubby Chernoble 6-8, Parachute Adams 14-18, Red Quill 14-16, Grey Drake 12-14, Compara Dun 14-16, Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, Humpy 14-16, Quigley Cripple 14-16, Rusty Spinner 14-16, and E/C Caddis 14-16 . For nymphs: Pats Rubber Legs 10-8, Twenty Incher 8-10, Peacock Stones 8-10, Soft Hackles 12-14, Prince Nymphs 8-10, Burk's Bottom roller 12-14, Flashback Pheasant Tail 14-18, SJW, Haresear 10-14, Copper Johns 12-14, Iron Sallies, Z wing Caddis 14-16, and Mercer's Poxyback Golden Stone 8-10. For Streamers try Sculpzilla 8-4, Woolley Buggers 6-8, and Sparkle Minnows 4.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is fishing pretty well. Dry Flies, Dry/Dropper rigs, Nymphing, and Streamers are catching some fish. Time to pay attention to the water temps in the upper reaches around Truckee. May have to downsize the offering and change flies a few times to get the eat.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The flows on the Little Truckee are currently 124cfs. The water temp is 58 degrees mid-day in the Lower end and the clarity is really good.

Little Truckee River Tactics

The Tactics for the Little Truckee River this time of the season. 1) Don't go where everyone is parked. 2) Observe the water you intend to fish before making a cast. 3) Make a good presentation appropiate for the bug you have on. There is sporatic hatches of various Mayflies most of the day and Caddis in the evenings. Saw a few Drakes the other day as well. May have to change a few flies to find a pattern the fish are happy to eat. Lots of fun out there to be had right now. If a dry doesn't work then a Dry with nymph dropper usually does the trick.

Little Truckee River Suggested Flies

Little Truckee River Suggested flies. For dry flies try, Parachute Adams 16-20, Green Drake Dun 10, Green Drake Cripple 10, PMD 14-16, Griffiths Gnat 18-20, Quigley Cripple 16-18, Thorax Dun 14-20, and Compara Dun 14-20. For nymphs try Micro May 16-20, Pheasant Tail 16-20, Flashback PT 16-20, Juju beatis 16-20, SJW, Copper Johns 14-20, Zebra Midge 18-20, RS2 16-20, WD-40 16-20, Green Drake 8-10 and HBI 14-16.

Little Truckee River Summary

The Little Truckee River is fishing well right now at the current flows. The fish are happy to eat a well presented Dry Fly. It may take a few changes to find the right pattern. Definitely worth a shot if you can find a spot.
