Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report April 22, 2021

This flyfishing report will focus on the Truckee River. It is still early in the season up here. The mornings are cold so no need to get out at the crack of dawn. The water and the fish are cold in the morning. There is minor runoff happening on the #truckeeriver but not enough to affect the fishing. Most of the flow is coming out of #Tahoe at this point and will be the number to watch as this season starts to play out. There are BWO's hatching mid-day and some Skwalas around as well. If you see a rising fish there is a good chance it will take a dry.

The rainbows are in spawning mode at this time some if you see them doing their thing let them be to do their thing. This is a wild fishery and is not planted.

Looking ahead I have added some clinics for the spring and summer. There is more info on my website here or give me a call at 530-386-0525.

Truckee River Conditions

The flows are 534cfs in Truckee and 619cfs at Boca. The water temps are in the low 40's in the morning and low 50's by 2pm. Clarity is great.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee river tactics for this early season are going to include a heavy dose of #nymphing. However, if you spot rising fish give a #dryfly a shot. Dry Droppers along the edges can also be worth a try. I have been able to dupe some nice fish on BWO's or Skwalas on top. At some point I would expect to see some March Browns making their appearance. Streamers are also worth a shot.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Hoppers 10-12, Royal Wluff 10-14, Skwala 8-10, or Chubby 10-12 for indicator flies. Parachute Adams 14-22, Quigley Cripple 16-20, Thorax Dun 14-18, Hackle Stacker 14-18, and Compara Dun 16-20. For nymphs: Pat's rubber leg 8-10, 20 incher 8-10, Poxyback Golden Stones 8-10, Haresear 12-14, Micro May 16-20, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, Pheasant Tail 14-20, Flashback PT 14-20, Perdigons 16-18, SJW, Copper Johns 14-20, Zebra Midge 18-22, RS2 16-20, WD-40 16-22, Brassie 16-20 and Prince 16-20. Truckee River Summary

The summary for the Truckee River. It is still early so no need to get out early. Fish have been opportunistic and eating on top when when bugs are available. Otherwise nymphing is the way to go.
