Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report August 27th, 2019

It has been a pretty remarkable August so far. Great #Dryflyfishing has been the theme. We are in the "Dogdays" of summer and the action has slowed a bit due to rising water temps. Flow release are still great for this time of year on both the Truckee and Little Truckee. The fishing on the Truckee is best early in the day and fish are looking up for a well presented fly.

Guide Service and Clinics

Currently taking reservations for 2019 #Steelhead fly fishing trips on the Klamath River in October. My season on the Klamath is very short and currently I have openings in the last half of October. Klamath Steelhead are super eager to eat a fly whether Swinging, Nymphing, or Skating. Super fun!

Four Seasons Fly Fishing is the Premier #Orvis endorsed #Guide service in the Truckee Tahoe Area. We offer trips walk/wade and boat trips on the local Reservoirs. We also offer #flyfishingclinics for beginners to experts in all styles of Fly Fishing and available anytime. Give us a call to book your adventure today. 530-386-0525

Truckee River Conditions

The flows are 285cfs in Truckee and 630cfs below Boca. Waters temps are getting warm with 66-67 at mid-day and 70 at 5pm. Water clarity is good.

Truckee River Tactics

Time to really use that thermometer that you be packing around for the last several months. Fish the upper river in the mornings and in afternoon move to where the cold water is coming in like below Proser Creek and Boca. The fish are still looking up for well presented flies. Most of the bugs have hatched and are starting the life cycle over again. So Midges, BWO's, Caddis and some Stoneflies are the bulk of what is happening now. Dryfly and Dry/Dropper techniques are working great. Nymphing with crawdads is also an effective mid-day technique when the fishing is slow. This could be the season of the Hopper? We'll see. I don't find them to be as effective here as in other parts of the west.

Truckee River Summary

The fly fishing continues to be good. Just need to follow your thermometer to stay in the colder water with the most active fish. Don't be afraid to change flies and move.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The Little Truckee River is in good shape with great flows at 99cfs and water temps 56 degree in the afternoon. The fish here are quite experienced and a bit finicky. Bring your"A" game for success here. There are small Beatis and PMD's hatching throughout the day. Some Micro Caddis in the late afternoons evenings and a lot of Hoppers.

Little Truckee River Tactics

The Tactics for the Little Truckee River this time of the season consist of long leader, smaller flies, and stealth. Plan your approach, make a decent cast, and change flies. Sometimes you will have to change several times. False casting here will not help. Wait a minute between casts if your putting the fish down. If there are a bunch of cars try a different section.
