Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report February 29th, 2020

This report will focus on the #TruckeeRiver. It has been a few beautiful weeks here in Truckee. Skiing in the morning and fishing in the afternoons. There is a little front passing through this weekend but not expecting more than a few inches of snow at best and then its gone. Bring on Miracle March again!

Looks like we might be in for an early spring so never to soon to put together your #FlyFishing plans. I have added some dates for both the Women's Clinic and the Truckee Sampler Clinic here.

Ever wanted to fish Montana? My Hosted Montana trip is a super intro into Montana trout fishing. Montana is having a great water year and when our trout fishing slows down theirs is just getting rolling. Fishing dates are Aug 3rd through 6th. Contact me for more information 530-386-0525

Truckee River Conditions

The flow on the river in Truckee is 105 cfs and at Boca it is 225cfs. Mid-day temps were 42 degrees. The the water is very clear.

Truckee River Tactics

Current tactics for the Truckee would be to fish the heat of the day. With the water being low and very clear. Use some stealth when approaching and with your gear. I did see the occasional fish rising on the last trip and there were some nice BWO's, Little Winter Stones, as well as plenty of Midges coming off at the time. Dry and or Dry/Dropper techniques work well in the shallower water and Nymphing for the deeper pools. No Skwalas were spotted in the area I fished. Doesn't hurt to try a streamer either especially down by Floristion. Whatever style of fly fishing you like give it a go.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Suggested flies for the Truckee River has not changed much since my last report. I have add the Skwala stone patterns to both my nymph and dry fly boxes. For Dry Flies: Turcks Trantula 8-10, Stimulator 8-10, Double Dutch 8-10, Cubby Chernoble 6-8, Parachute Adams 16-22, Compara Dun 16-20, Elk Hair Caddis 14-18, Thorax Dun 16-22, Quigley Cripple 16-22, Spinner 16-22, Griffiths Gnat 18-20, and E/C Caddis 16-18.
