Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report for August 19th, 2025

We have been enjoying excellent conditions on the Truckee river and in the Truckee Tahoe area. This report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. The weather has been awesome with the overnight lows getting into the mid-40's (it is August) which is perfect for this time of year. Its sounds like we are in for a warm up later in the week. The flows are steady in the upper half and have dropped to summer flow levels in the lower river. I suspect that change is coming for the flow out of Lake Tahoe but, don't have an exact date. The area creeks are low and warm and looking to a September cooldown to bring the creeks back into fishing shape. We could bump into "hoot owl" conditions sooner in the afternoons if the water is dropped and temperatures go up. Keep an eye on the flows. Hatches are starting to wain a bit more however there are some Trico's out in the morning on the Truckee and I have noticed the husks of the big Mutant Stones in the last week. The question is do your fish big or do you go small? Do you challege yourself on the LT or Stick with the Truckee? Choices, its a good time to be here.

Truckee River Conditions

Truckee River flows are currently 279 cubic feet per second above town, and below Boca inflow they are 517 cubic feet per second. Water temps are 65-66 degrees mid-day. Water clairity is good. Watch the thermometer in the late afternoons as it is bumping 68 which triggers "hoot owl" restrictions.

Truckee River Techniques

Truckee River techniques are fish what makes you happy. If you want to nymph than nymph. If you want to throw streamers by all means huck away. Dries or dry/dropper your thing have at it. From Bear Creek to the Stateline the river is very fishable. Go big with stonesflies and crawdads or take it down small with the Tricos. Your choice.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is in excellent shape for fishing until mid-day. The flows are great for the flyfisher from top to bottom. You just have to decide if your are going to throw the Big Junk or finesse the fish with the smaller bugs? Both are working.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The Little Truckee flows are currently 50cfs. Water temps were 54-56 degrees mid-day. Clarity is very good.

Little Truckee River Techniques

Little Truckee River is in its technical mode and going to take some skill to dupe these fish. The fish have wised up with less water and less room to hide. It is time to lengthen the leader, drop a hook size or two, loose the white shirt and sneak around the runs. Still plenty of Mayflies, Midges, and small Caddis coming off they are just smaller.
