Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report July 22nd, 2025

This report will cover the great fishing that we are experiencing on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. Welcome to mid-summer fly fishing. It was blazing hot last week and now we are in for a bit of a cool down this week. I am digging the cooler temps, so I know the fish on the Truckee will enjoy it as well. This change makes for more compfortable fishing for us humans on the Little Truckee too. Its a tailwater and at these flows the water doesn't warm up that much before running into Boca. Flows are steady on both rivers and that is a plus. Drakes and PMD's are still popping mid-day on the LT. And the Truckee has a little bit of everything going on. However, the fish are starting to wise up a bit and and demanding more from you as an angler. The "chuck it and hope" tactics of two weeks ago aren't going to cut it moving forward. Make those casts count the first time.

Truckee River Conditions

Truckee River flows are currently 288 cubic feet per second above town, and below Boca inflow they are 625 cubic feet per second. Water temps are 65-66 degrees mid-day. Water clairity is good. Watch the thermometer in the late afternoons moving forward.

Truckee River Techniques

Truckee River techniques would be dries, dry/dropper, nymphing any style, and streamers are all producing fish at various times. The whole river is fishable and Mayflies and Caddis are still coming off. Nymphing is a strong option throughout the day. Dries have been good early and late in the day. I have noticed more minnows swimming around and crawdads. Nymphing a crawdad pattern with a smaller nymph is a good choice.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Truckee River suggested flies. The larger stoneflies, mayflies, and caddis are all present.  Dry flies: try ants 10, Parachute Adams 14-20, Purple Haze 14-18, March Brown 14-16, Thorax Dun 14-16, Rusty Spinner 14-16, Compara Dun10-16, Green Drake 10, Green Drake emergers 10, Royal Wulff 10-16, Chubby Chernoble 10-12, Double Dutch 8-10, Quigley Cripples 10-16, and RS-2 16-20. For streamers try Woolley Bugger 6, Sculpzilla 8, and Sparkle Minnow 6.

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is fishing great from Hwy 89 to the stateline. The flows throughout the river are excellent for wade fishing. Fish dries early and late in the day and nymph throughout the middle of the day for success.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The Little Truckee flows are currently 161cfs. Water temps were 52-54 degrees mid-day. Clarity is very good.

Little Truckee River Techniques

Little Truckee River Technique for this week again is Dry Fly! Green Drakes and PMD's are popping and the fish are looking up. It has been very good topwater action but the fish are wising up. Good presentations will get results while missing the mark will leave you fustrated. Dry/dropper in between the hatches. Speaking of crowds it is busy out on the LT have little patience and give other anglers space there is plenty of other holes.

Little Truckee River Suggested Flies

Suggested Flies for the LT. GreenDrakes and PMD's are the first choices. But don't overlook the Caddis and Midges. For Dries: Parachute Adams 14-22, Green Drake 10, Green Drake emerger 10, Elk Hair Caddis 14-16, E/C Caddis 14/16, Quigley Cripple 14-16, Thorax Dun 14-16, Hackle Stacker 14-16, Flim Critic 14-16, Emergers 16-20, RS218- 20, Griffiths Gnat 18-20, Soft Hackles 14-16, and Compara Dun 10-16. For nymphs: Haresear 14-18, Burks Bottom Roller 14-16, HBI 16-18, Brassie 16-20, AP nymph 14-16, Micro May 16-20, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, Barrs emerger 14-18, Pheasant Tail 14-20, Flashback PT 14-20, Juju Beatis 16-18, Perdigons 16-18, SJW, Copper Johns 12-16, Zebra Midge 16-20, and Princes 16-18.

Little Truckee River Summary

The Little Truckee River is fishing quite well with mid-day hatches of Green Drakes and PMD's. Check the flows - you never know when the watermaster will change it up. There are hatches of anglers as well. Excercise some patience and give each other some room and enjoy.
