Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report May 19th, 2021

This May 19th report will focus on the Truckee River. The #Truckeeriver has been producing some solid fish lately. There are lots of bugs popping and the water is warming up and pretty clear. This time of year is always tough because there is so much food available for the fish eat. I have see BWO's in large numbers still, March Browns, Golden Stones, and Ants. Given the high flows it is difficult to find places to safely cross so keep that in mind when you choose your location to fish.

Truckee River Conditions

The flows in Truckee are 625cfs and at Boca 747cfs. The mid-day temps have hit 54 degrees on the sunny days and a bit cooler on the days when it is freezing at night. The water is clear.

Truckee River Tactics

The Truckee River has been primarily a nymphing game game lately. However, I have had some success with Dry/Droppers when fishing slots next to the bank. Streamers have also gotten some attention from the fish as well. For consistent success I would stick with the nymphing game for now. The fish are not going to travel through the water column to eat that BWO when there are ten nymphs rolling by on the bottom. The weather will also be a factor at this time of year. The forecast for this weekend is looking cold and maybe alittle wet. The overcast days have been fishing pretty well.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Royal Wluff 10-14, Skwala 8-10, or Chubby 10-12 for indicator flies. Other dries; Parachute Adams 14-22, Quigley Cripple 16-20, Thorax Dun 14-18, Hackle Stacker 14-18, and Compara Dun 16-20. For nymphs; Pat's rubber leg 8-10, 20 incher 8-10, Poxyback Golden Stones 8-10, Haresear 12-14, Burks Bottom Roller 14-16, Micro May 16-20, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, Pheasant Tail 14-20, Flashback PT 14-20, Perdigons 16-18, SJW, Copper Johns 12-16 and Princes 10-14. For Streamers; Sparkle Minnow 4, Sculpzilla 4, Muddler Minnow 6, and Woolley Bugger 6-8

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is fishing pretty good right now. Nymphing has been the most productive method but, conditions change and dries or streamers will get eaten in the right conditions for them. There is a lot of food available for the fish at the moment and you might have to change up a few times to dial in the pattern of choice. Be careful where you choose to cross the river is fast and pushy right now.

Other Fly Fishing Venues

The Reservoirs are all at around 50% capacity at this point. The bass bite is getting better near the dams or any structure. The trout are moving around and fishing from shore can be pretty good. The inlets have been producing some fish as well.

The smaller streams are low already but the water temps are still cold. When it starts to warm up the window for these streams will be short. However, the dry fly action could be pretty good during that short window.
