Well folks groundhog day might be coming to an end. This could be the last weekend to get out and enjoy some easy access winter Fly Fishing here in the Truckee Area. Not much has changed over the last few weeks. The days are slowly getting longer which means a little more time on the water. But hey, it is Winter fishing season out here and Nymphing is going to be the best option. Occasionally there will be some hatches that get the fish looking up and those windows are pretty short. While we had a little snow this week but looks like we are in for some actual winter next week with low snow levels. This will probably affect access to the Truckee and Little Truckee rivers so keep that in mind that parking may be limited. On the other hand the skiing might actually might turn around and be pretty awesome.

Truckee River Conditions
The Truckee is flowing at 129 cubic feet a second above town and down at Boca it is 467 cubic feet a second. The water is very clear above Boca inflow but a bit turbid below the Little Truckee inflow. The mid-afternoon temps are 40-42 degrees.
Truckee River Tactics
Truckee River Tactics for this report are similar to the last Nymphing is going to be the most productive. Low and slow. Streamers would be my second choice. Vary the presentation to find what works. There may be some short windows of dry fly action so be ready.
Truckee River Suggested Flies
Truckee River suggested flies: Dry flies: Parachute Adams 16-22, Purple Haze 14-20, Thorax Dun 16-20, Sparkle Flag 16-18, Griffiths Gnat 18-22, Chubby Chernoble 6-12, Double Dutch 8-10, Quigley Cripples 16-22, and RS-2 16-20. For nymphs: Haresear 12-16, Zebra Midge 18-22, Micro May 16-22, Rainbow Warrior 16-22, Pheasant Tail 16-22, Flashback PT 16-22, Perdigons 14-18, SJW, Copper Johns 16-20, Frenchie 12 -16, Rubber legs 6-14, Twenty Incher 8-14, Tim's Dead Drift Cray, and Princes 8-18. Truckee River Summary
It is going to be the last weekend of easy access to the Truckee and Little Truckee rivers before our first week of winter storms in almost 7 weeks start on Sunday night. Nymphing low and slow is going to be the tactic of choice but don't rule out running a streamer. Keep an eye out for the random dry fly eater as well. Good Luck.
