Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report December 5th, 2020

This report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. It is hard to believe that it is December with it being so damn nice out! Time for a Fly Fishing update. We are currently in the "Winter Regulations" time of year for our area. This means that the Truckee River is open from Trout Creek to the stateline and the Little Truckee is open between Boca and Stampede reservoirs only. Zero Kill and barbless hooks only. The reservoirs are all open with standard regs. The fishing has been pretty decent with the current weather pattern.

Yes I do gift certificates and they make wonderful Christmas gifts. Just call 530-386-0525 or email brian@flyfishingtruckee-tahoe.com and I will get you all setup.

Truckee River Conditions

Currently, the Truckee River is flowing at 75cfs in town and 236 below the Boca inflow. The mid-day water temps are 38-40 when the sun is out. The water is gin clear.

Little Truckee(LT) River Conditions

The flow on the Little Truckee are 44cfs. The water is clear and water temp is 38-40 mid-day.

Truckee River/LT Tactics

The Truckee River and Little Truckee River are fishing pretty similar so I am going to combine the rest of the report. On both waters it is cold and clear so tactics should reflect those conditions.

1) Fish low and slow. The water is cold and clear so put it in their face. Nymphing the deeper runs and Dry/Dropper for the shallower sections. Don't be afraid to put a big ol dry on there and you may get a nice surprise.

2) Fish the heat of the day. Usually, when the air temp is hitting 50 degrees the water will warm 2 or 3 degrees in the middle of the day and the fish will get more active and willing to eat. Certainly don't start at first light.

3) Smaller Mayflies and Midges are the ticket this time of year.

4) Overcast days can get the fish looking up. Be ready!

Truckee River/LT Suggested Flies

Beatis, and Midges are all out and about. Hoppers 10-12, Royal Wluff 10-14, or Chubby 10-12 for indicator fly. Parachute Adams 14-22, Griffiths Gnat 16-22, Quigley Cripple 16-20, Thorax Dun 14-18, Hackle Stacker 14-18, and Compara Dun 16-20. For nymphs: Micro May 16-20, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, Pheasant Tail 16-20, Flashback PT 16-20, Perdigons 16-18, SJW, Copper Johns 14-20, Zebra Midge 18-22, RS2 16-20, WD-40 16-22, Brassie 16-20 and Prince 16-20.

Truckee River/LT Summary

Both the Truckee River and Little Truckee River are fishing decent. Some days are slow and some days you pick up a few fish. It is not summer fishing and it is a bit technical right now. If that is your thing then you should have a great time and the weather is pretty sweet for getting outside.
