Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report June 10th, 2021

This report will focus on the #Truckeeriver and a few outlying venues. We are currently enjoying a nice cool down from last weeks summer like temperatures. The fishing has been very good. #Fish are looking up for those big bugs and even the smaller ones. The Truckee River flows are still good. How much longer they stay up remains to be seen. Fish while the fishing is good.

Meanwhile, out on to the smaller backcountry creeks the fishing has been good as well. Lower than normal flows and cool water temps. #Miltonreservoir has been fishing great. Water level is lower here as well and water temps are typical Milton cold.

June 12th Women's Only Clinic Full-day on the Truckee River

July 21st and 22nd Two Day Clinic Truckee Area Sampler

Plenty of mid-week days available for guiding as well.

Truckee River conditions

Truckee River flows are 396cfs in town and 496cfs at Boca. Water temps when air temps are warm have been 58-60 mid-day and the clarity is good.

Truckee River Tactics

Truckee River tactics are changing as the water temp rises the fish are looking up. The deep nymphing techniques have not been doing as well all day long like previous weeks. The fish are looking up for those big and little morsels. Dry Fly and Dry/dropper techniques have been the ticket. It is a smorgasbord of food in the water column right now so if you're not getting grabs change size or change the bug. Stoneflies, Ants, and Mayflies have all been getting hits. Look for the Green Drakes to be popping soon!

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Double Dutch 8-10, Royal Wluff 10-12, or Chubby 10-12 for indicator flies. Other dries; Yellow Sally 14-16, Green Drake Parachute 10, Parachute Adams 12-22, Stimulator 8-10, Ants 10, Quigley Cripple 16-20, Thorax Dun 14-18, Hackle Stacker 14-18, and Compara Dun 16-20. For nymphs; Pat's rubber leg 8-10, Green Drake 8-10, 20 incher 8-10, Poxyback Golden Stones 8-10, Haresear 12-14, Burks Bottom Roller 14-16, Micro May 16-20, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, Pheasant Tail 14-20, Flashback PT 14-20, Perdigons 16-18, SJW, Copper Johns 12-16 and Princes 10-14. For Streamers; Sparkle Minnow 4, Sculpzilla 4, Muddler Minnow 6, and Woolley Bugger 6-8

Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River is fishing very good. The flows remain solid and the water temps are perfect. Dry Fly action has been good as well. Look for the Green Drakes to be popping soon. It is time to hit the water.

Milton at Milton

Milton Reservoir Conditions

Milton is currently about lower than normal and inflow is also down for this time of year. Water temps were 48-52 degrees but, I bet that will change as it get warmer. It is also very clear. Can be busy at times.

Milton Reservoir Tactics

Tactics for Milton can very day to day but usually you work through Dry, Dry/dropper, and indicator nymphing to find what is working best. Sinking line techniques work well here too but, I found I have used them much less when the other techniques working so well. It is best fished from a floating device. There are wading opportunities here as well.

Milton Reservoir Suggested Flies

For Dryflies try: Parachute Adams 14-20, Griffiths Gant 14-18, Mahogany Dun 14-18, Quigley Cripples 14-18, Compara Duns 14-18, Hackle Stacker 14-18, suspender midges 16-10 and Ants 10-16. For Nymphs try: Zebra Midges 16-18, Callibeatis 14-16, RS-2 14-18, Mercury Midge 16-18, PT and Flashback PT 14-18, Birdsnest 14-16, and Sheep's Creek 14-18. Streamers Try: Damsels, Dragons, and Woolley buggers 6-10.

Milton Reservoir Summary

Milton Reservoir is fishing good right now. There are tons of eager Brown Trout none of which will pull you arms off. It is certainly a nice place to spend a day and challenge yourself to figure out what is working that day.
