Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishing Report May 24th, 2022

This report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. Great spring fly fishing conditions for this Memorial Day Weekend. We have water! Flows are up on both venues and nothing is too big to be a problem at this time. The weather has been great for several days in a row. Although we may have a little disturbance coming on Saturday. Given the weather, I would expect the Carpenter Ants to get rolling any day now and the fish to be looking up for them. Love this time of year. Gotta carry all the gear cause just don't know what you might find the fish to be into. All of the bugs are getting going and available for the fish to eat. Both the Truckee and Little Truckee have had nice hatches of Mayflies mid-day.

Thank to all who took my nymphing clinic last Saturday. My next scheduled clinic is my Women's Only Clinic on June 25th. I have two spots left. Call 530-386-0525 or email brian@flyishingtruckee-tahoe.com to sign up.

Truckee River Conditions

The Truckee River flows are 431cfs in town and 919cfs at Boca. The water is hitting 50 by mid-day and a little off color but completely fishable. It is spring and there is some runoff from the last series of storms.

Truckee River Tactics

The Truckee River Tactics are as variable as the flows right now. Take your pick Dries, Nymphing, and Streamers can all get it done. However, it is mostly a nymphing game at this time. The water is up and coldest in the morning so you will have to get down to find a fish and run an extra pass or two in that likely holding water. The fish are spread out a bit as well. I favor Indicator nymphing over Euro style at these flows. There is a strong mid-day hatch of BWOs and March Browns with a few fish inconsistantly taking the March Browns on top. Your going to have to work for your dry fly takes. Streamers early or late in the day can also be a good option. Come prepared to try it all and bring your wading staff.

Truckee River Suggested Flies

Truckee River Suggested Flies at this time. For Dry/Dropper rigs the Stimulator 10-14, Royal Wulff 8-10, Double Dutch 18-10, and Chubbies 8-10. If you spot some rising rise here are some dries to try. Ants 10-12, Thorax Dun 12-18, Hackle Stacker 12-18, Parachute Adams 12-18, Quigley Cripple 12-18, Griffiths Gnat 16-20, Midges 18-22 and Compara Dun 16-20. Truckee River Summary

The Truckee River flows are up and the weather is good. It is a great time to get out and try whatever style of fly fishing appeals to you. Nymphing is going to be the most productive. Keep an eye out for the Carpenter Ants.

Little Truckee River Conditions

The flows on the Little Truckee are 197cfs and have been for a while. I forgot to take the water temps but clarity is good.

Little Truckee River Tactics

Little Truckee River Tactics are pretty straight forward. Dry, Dry/Dropper, or Nymphing are all going to work at some point in the day. Don't be afraid to try a Streamer as well. You may have switch it up a bit to find what is working. The Little Truckee has been pretty busy already. These fish have been educated so stealthy approach the holes and your gear will pay off.

Little Truckee River Suggested Flies

Little Truckee River flies. Try the Royal Wluff 10-14, Ant 10, or Chubby 10-12 for indicator flies. Other dries; Parachute Adams 14-22, Quigley Cripple 16-20, Thorax Dun 14-18, Hackle Stacker 14-18, Flashback emerger 16-18, and Compara Dun 16-20. The Little Truckee River is in good shape. You will not be alone. There are fish spread throughout the river and it may take some fly changes to dial in what they want.
