This Report will focus on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. It looks like we are in for a change of weather this weekend. While it doesn't look like much water will come from this at least we are going to get a change from the pattern of the last two months. The big thing is that it will get cold and this will cool off the water pretty well. The Truckee River has been fishing well below Boca with nymphing being the most productive method. Over on the Little Truckee river there has been good flows and really good hatches of BWO's for Dryfly fishing. The Kokanee have moved into the river to spawn as well. Either venue will require good presentation and technique. The fish have seen many a fly this season with both good and bad presentation techniques. It will take your "A" game.
Truckee River Conditions
Truckee River is super low in town. However, down below Boca the flow is 395cfs. The water is a bit turbid and the temps are in the upper 50's mid-day.
Truckee River Tactics
Truckee River Tactics will focus on the water below Boca where the flows are bigger. Nymphing techniques and Streamers would be my first choices for targeting this section of the river. As the water is starting to finally cool off using some weight and tungsten beaded flies will help to get the flies in the zone. If the water really cools off do to the up coming storm trying fishing the heat of the day.
Truckee River Suggested Flies
For nymphs: Haresear 12-14, Pat's Rubberleggs 8-12, Mercer's Poxyback Stones 10-12, 20 incher 8-12, Burk's Bottom Roller 14-16, Pheasant Tail 14-18, Flashback PT 14-18, Perdigons 14-16, SJW, Glow Bugs, Copper Johns 14-18, Frenchie 14-18, and Princes 12-16. Soft Hackles Orange, Pheasant Tail, and Haresear 14-16. For Streamers: Woolley Bugger 6-10, Sculpzilla 4-8, and Dolly Llama 6.
Truckee River Summary
The Truckee River below Boca has good flows and is fishing well for those that like to nymph and throw streamers. Look for the up coming weather to change things a bit.
Little Truckee River Conditions
The Little Truckee River flows are currently 121cfs. The water temps are in the upper 50's Mid-day and the clarity is good.
Little Truckee River Tactics
The Little Truckee River is fishing pretty good. Long leaders and smaller tippet are needed for the little dries on top. I found prospecting with a small Dryfly to be great. Pay attention to the presentation and don't let the drag build up. Dry Dropper or nymphing techniques with smaller bugs and tippet has also been effective. There are Kokanee and Browns spawning or finishing up the spawn so give them a break if you seen fish paired up or fresh gravel turned up.
Little Truckee River Suggested Flies
Little Truckee suggested flies would include smaller BWO patterns and even Caddis. Try a Hopper 10, October Caddis or Chubby 12-14 for indicator flies. Other dries; Parachute Adams 14-22, Elk Hair Caddis 16-18, Quigley Cripple 16-20, Thorax Dun 14-20, Hackle Stacker 14-20, E/C Caddis 16-18, Missing Link 16, Flashback emerger 16-18, RS2 20, Griffiths Gnat 18-20, and Compara Dun 16-20. For nymphs; Haresear 14-18, Burks Bottom Roller 14-16, HBI 14-16, Sparkle Pupa 14-16, Poopa 14-16, Micro May 16-20, Rainbow Warrior 16-20, Barrs emerger 14-18, Pheasant Tail 14-20, Flashback PT 14-20, Juju Beatis 16-18, Perdigons 16-18, SJW, Glow Bugs, Copper Johns 12-16, Zebra Midge 16-20, and Princes 16-18.
Little Truckee River Summary
The Little Truckee River is fishing pretty good. Long leaders and smaller tippet are needed for the little dries on top and will help with nymphing as well. As long as the flows continue the Little Truckee should be a pretty good choice.
